The small businesses that stopped losing money to fine print

What one forgotten clause used to cost them, and what changed once Fineprint started reading their contracts.

What burned me: our yard lease. It had one of those clauses, if you don't give notice ninety days out it renews by itself and the rate steps up. I found out when the invoice came. Seventy-two hundred dollars a year more, and I was stuck with it. My fault, it was in the thing I signed. But who remembers a date from three years ago?

With Fineprint: The lease renewal now sits in my calendar with the clause attached. I got the reminder 30 days out and renegotiated instead of eating the increase.

Last spring the implant supplier had been billing four percent over the agreed rate for, we think, nine months. They called it a 'logistics adjustment.' There was nothing in the agreement that allowed it. We got a credit, but only because our accountant happened to be bored.

With Fineprint: Every invoice gets checked the day it arrives. It caught a surcharge in week two and wrote the email for me. I just hit send.

I run it all from a spreadsheet I built in 2019. It works until it doesn't. When I was out for surgery in March, two certificates lapsed and one commercial tenant's renewal notice window slipped. Nobody else can read my spreadsheet.

With Fineprint: The whole team sees one calendar, built from the actual leases. Nothing slipped when I took two weeks off this summer.

One supplier has a clause allowing cost increases 'with sixty days written notice.' They raised prices with a line at the bottom of an invoice. Is that written notice? We paid the higher price for two shipments before I even saw it.

With Fineprint: I forward invoices and get back 'fine' or '6% over, here's the email.' We got a credit on the very next shipment.

My biggest customer switched me to net 45. Didn't ask. It was in an email, 'per our updated vendor terms.' The contract says net 30. I noticed in month three when my line of credit started hurting.

With Fineprint: Fineprint flagged that net 45 isn't in my contract and drafted the pushback. We're back on net 30.

Apex says there's a new "logistics adjustment." Are they allowed to do that?

No. Your agreement fixes unit prices until Mar 2027 and doesn't allow surcharges. Any change needs a signed amendment.
Apex Supply Agreement §3.1, §9.4
Draft reply: "Hi Rachel, thanks for the heads-up. Our agreement (§3.1) fixes pricing through March 2027, so we can't accept the adjustment. Could you remove it from invoices going forward and credit the last three?"

4. Every invoice, checked on arrival

A new invoice lands in your inbox. Minutes later you know if it breaks the contract, with the dispute already written. If it's fine, you hear nothing.

Why you can trust it

Contracts are ambiguous. Fineprint flags it.

When a clause can be read two ways, or an invoice and a contract don't agree, Fineprint doesn't guess. It marks the item "Not sure", explains why, and shows you the exact paragraph.

📎 Every date links to its clause. One click and you see the exact paragraph.
Not sure Doubtful items are marked, with the reason, so you check them instead of trusting them.
🔒 Read-only access. We never send anything without your OK. Start with one folder if you like.
